Swellendam: Marloth Nature reserve

Extending from the edge of the town to the top of the majestic
Langeberg mountains Swellendam's Marloth Nature reserve is a botanist's
dream with an abundance of wild flowers and fynbos. There are several
hiking trails with beautiful walks to waterfalls through indigenous
forest. For those who wish to undertake the entire 81km Swellendam
trail, there are six huts positioned at regular intervals. There
are also several day walks. At the Marloth Nature Reserve, you will
see klipspringer, duiker, rhebok and leopard.

Swellendam: Bontebok National Park

Ca 5km from our accommodation is the Bontebok National Park, cradled between the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede Rivier. Besides bontebok, the park is also home to zebra, red hartebeest and grey rhebok. The park is home to 200 bird species. Bird watchers should look out for secretary birds and fish eagles. This Park's biodiversity and rich history and cultural heritage further contribute to a place of history, peace and beauty.

Swellendam: Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve

To the east of Swellendam, ca. half a hour's drive from our B&B,
is Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. An indigenous forest of 250ha
that can be explored on foot or on a mountain bike. Grootvadersbosch
is a birder's paradise. There are about 200 bird species, including
the crowned eagle, the black eagle, marina trogon, paradise flycatcher
and the Knysna woodpecker. Bushbuck, klipspringer, grey rhebuck,
Cape grysbok, baboon, mongoose, genet and the occasional leopard
are found, as well as a species of ghost frog and a unique forest
emperor butterfly. Two hides have been built at separate spots within
the forest canopy. A short hike will bring you to the Duivenhoks
River, where swimming and kloofing possibilities exist in a beautiful
gorge.
